For Rick Bowers: The Mussel Expert

Today, Rick Bowers, a fellow graduate student passed away after battling with brain cancer for a year. Though I didn’t know Rick as well as my other friends, Rick is the Southern gentlemen and mussels expert. While spending a few days in the field with him, he not only exemplified his Southern hospitality of opening car and restaurant doors for accompanying women, but he truly knew anything and everything about mussels. Here is one of his publications: “Effects of hydrology on unionids and sebra mussels in a Lake Erie coastal wetland.” While helping Rick clean mussels with ethanol, in order to organize them by size and type, I learned about all the different mussel species inhabiting the coastal wetland he surveyed off Catawba Island. The mussels he let me keep are still sitting on my bookshelf, where they will stay in Rick’s memory.

  1. Yes, its very sad. I probably learned more about mussels helping Rick than at any other time in my life.

  2. I am Rick’s wife. Thank you for your kind words. Rick sure did enjoy teaching and mussels (especially when the two of them were combined!). I am glad that he left a positive impact on others. He sure did so on our family. We miss him terribly.

    • Thank you, Jennifer. It was always good times hanging out with Rick at Ottawa. I’m sorry for your loss.
